Be my BFF
I need your help! We are working on our annual Trunk or Treat at my church and you’d be my BFF if you tell me what you’ve found that works and doesn’t work. Last year we decided to schedule the Trunk or Treat the same night as our town pumpkin walk and parade. We weren’t prepare for the big crowd that would bring. After 30 minutes, we were out of food and candy. We’re not gonna get caught like that this year. Here’s what we have planned so far:
- We formed a committee this year to spread out the work and so we can do a better job
- We are doubling the number of cars
- We are renting a few giant inflatables (new this year)
- We are going crazy on decorating this year (bails of straw, corn stalks, and pumpkins!)
- We are tripling the amount of food that we buy
- We are doing a hayride, petting zoo, face painting, hair coloring (the spray), and balloons – all new this year too
- We will have people vote for their favorite car and on the entry form we will get their contact info for follow up
Is there anything we are forgetting? Tell me what works and what doesn’t for your church and I promise, you’ll be my best friend forever!

Never did a “Trunk or Treat” but did several similar events, I think. Do the kids just get candy at each car or could they have to “do” something like a quick CARnival game (get it)?
Saw your magazine the other day, Ryan, and was really impressed. God is doing great things through you – keep up the good work!

Since most of the activities are for children, we had random drawings for prizes that the adults that brought the kids would like; gift cards to restaurants, Home Depot, or any other local store in your area. We also made a couple of nice gift baskets that were “movie” themes, with a DVD, microwave popcorn, and candy. Everyone could enter by filling out a raffle ticket w/ name, address, and phone. Another source of follow up information, and the parents were thrilled that something was for them!

We do a photo booth each year. People come back each year just for their annual family photo in costume! We ask people to register and send them their pics after the event. The beauty of this is that we then have their addresses to follow-up. On last year’s registration card we asked for prayer or follow-up requests. It gave us a chance to target their specific needs, set up Bible studies, pray, and invite them to other events for families.
Last year we also followed up our Harvest Party with a Christmas Pajama Party, complete with Santa pictures and hot cocoa. We had TONS of people show up for that event, and it was way more fun than a pageant, and way more friendly to non-church folks!

We hit up local food vendors that do fairs, etc and offer them free space to come and sell their food. They are excited to not have to pay for space, and we don’t have to worry about food at all!
