What bugs me about family ministry
Do you wanna know one of the biggest things that bugs me about family ministry? Get ready because I’m going to tell you! It’s people who think you have to change everything and start from scratch. Let me explain.
Every time I go to a children’s ministry conference, there are always people who want to tell about the new family ministry at their church. Because I’m supportive and I genuinely want to learn, I always listen.
Here is a list of stuff I hear:
We dropped VBS.
We quit Awana.
We aren’t doing Sunday School anymore.
We started a family service.
I’m not the children’s pastor anymore. I am the family pastor.
We’re using a new curriculum.
This has been on my heart for years. I am so glad that finally someone is talking about family ministry.
Is there anything wrong with rethinking the way the church ministers to the family? Not at all. Since mom and dad are the primary spiritual influencers in the lives of their kids, we better take a good hard look at how we do what we do as a church. But here is my question: Why do we have to drop everything and start from scratch? Instead of reinventing every ministry in the church, can’t we look at existing ministries and leverage them to help mom and dad be the spiritual leaders they need to be?
What do you think?

How to make VBS the biggest thing all summer – part 3
Third, develop objectives and a strategy.
What are your objectives for VBS? I hope that two of your objectives are to reach lost children with the Gospel and to disciple children that are already Christians. You will probably have some other objectives thrown in the mix.
Your objectives become a reality when you have a strategy. Another way of saying it is this: your strategy drives your objectives. You should develop a strategy that begins many months (maybe even a year) before VBS and leads right up to the week of VBS. Most VBS kits include a plan to help you with this process. Be committed to the plan.

Standard Publishing VBS program voted “Best VBS”
Yesterday it was announced that Standard Publishing’s 2010 VBS, Hero HeadQuarters, Where Kids Join Forces with God!, was been voted “Best VBS” by Your Church Magazine (published by Christianity Today).
Each year Your Church Magazine conducts an independent study with many VBS programs and evaluates those programs based on music, content, crafts and more.
“The strong theme of unsung Bible heroes and the message to kids of being an everyday hero is exciting to churches who are using Hero HeadQuarters this year,” states Larry Carpenter, president of Standard Publishing.
Standard Publishing is the original publisher of VBS material, having produced VBS programs since 1922. Standard Publishing’s material was true-to-the Bible then and still is true-to-the Bible to this day.
The independent survey conducted by Your Church magazine can be found at www.yourchurchmagazine.com.
