The Power of Pivoting

Beth listened to a sermon last week on the power of pivoting, and it was so good. She said, "Ryan, you've got to listen to this." She pulled me in, and we started listening to one of her podcast pastors. I'm telling you what, it was good. I told her, "I'm going to do a video on this topic because it's that good."

Here's what happens: we get moving in one direction in life. We move straight; we keep moving. We keep going; we keep walking, and then we get a year, two, or ten years down the road and look back at the direction we've walked in. But what's amazing is if you will just pivot a tiny bit, (I'm not talking about taking a 45 degree turn or a 90 degree turn) even if you just take a five degree turn, a small pivot from here to here and you start walking, what happens? You get a year, two, three, four, or five down the road, and you think, "Wow, I ended up here, and I would've been over there." It's the power of small pivots.

I can't take the credit for this, but I'm telling you what, it's good. I thought that I needed to tell  the kidmin community about this because there's power in pivots. Here's the thing, we can think, "Well, I'm stuck this way. This is the way I am; this is who I am. This is how I'm wired; this is my lot in life. There's no way I can ever do that. There's no way I could ever be that person. There's no way I can ever get this ministry there; it's too hard."

No, the answer is in the power of pivot, a small turn. I'm not talking about turning around, doing a 180. I'm not talking about a 90 degree turn. I'm not even talking about a 45. I'm talking about the power of just a five degree turn. You start walking in that direction, and what happens? One day you look back and you have made a lot of traction.

Friends, listen. I don't know what's going on in your life right now. I don't know what's going on in your ministry. I don't know what's going on with your pastor. I don't know what's going on with your board or your denomination. I don't know what's going on in your marriage. I don't know what's going on with your kids. I don't know what's going on internally. Here's what I know: with God, nothing is impossible.

Small little turns with God's help, God's blessing, and the Holy Spirit's power in your life can make a huge difference. Here's a frog I want you to eat today: I've talked to you a lot about eating the frog first. Mark Twain said that if you eat a live frog first thing in the morning, that nothing worse can happen to you the rest of the day.

In other words, if you eat a live frog first thing in the morning, what worse can happen? I want you to really take a look in your heart at what changes you need to make. What changes need to be made in your life as a husband, as a wife, as a mom, as a dad? What changes need to happen professionally as a pastor or as a leader? What changes do you need to make? What kind of changes need to happen in your ministry, as far as systems, structures, or programs?

Here's the frog I want you to eat. I want you to wrestle through this question. What is a small pivot I can make that will make a big difference?

I'm not talking about changing your whole ministry around. I'm not talking about relocating your family, or quitting your job. I want you to do a few little things different that over the course of a period of time they are going to make a big difference.
