Shut Out Negative Voices
I’ve been working with leaders for many years now; ministry leaders, business leaders. Here’s what I have found. Most people know what they need to do and they know exactly the right thing to get them where they need to be, but the roadblock, the obstacle that gets them everytime is this; they are listening to the wrong voices.
They can have the map laid out right in front of them and know exactly where it is they need to go, but too many leaders listen to the wrong voices and they end up stopping short of where they need to go. They end up stopping short of becoming who they need to be.
What voices are you listening to? We put way, way, way too much emphasis and we put way too much importance on the voices of those around us that they shouldn’t have that voice; they shouldn’t have that influence in our life. There are people around you (it should be a small group) that you want and that you need speaking into your life and into your future. By including them in your life, it is a destiny decision to help you get where you need to be.
More often than not, we get in trouble not because we are listening to those right voices, but we are listening to the voices that tell us “you can’t” - The voices of those that tell us you are going to fail, there’s no way you are going to make it, there’s no way you can launch that, there’s no way you can become that. Sometimes those voices are voices of actual real people, people that are negative people. Most of the time, the people who boo loudest in the stands are those that never had the courage to go out on the field in the beginning. And here you are; you’re out in the field listening to those in the stands telling you that you can’t do it. They are the ones that you should not be listening to. Sometimes those voices come from inside of us. Those voices of fear, what if I fail; those voices of insecurity, I don’t know if I have what it takes; those voices of past regrets, what if I do that again; the voices of past hurts, don’t do that- it’s only going to cost you- it cost you before, it will cost you again.
Learn to listen to the right voices in your life. Whether you are a pastor, a business leader, a CEO, an employee, a stay-at-home mom, a stay-at-home dad, a college student, a high school student- I don’t care where you are in your life journey or what you are doing, you absolutely have to get this right, and that is to listen to the right voices. Shut out the voices of those that are negative; shut out the voices of those that tell you you can’t do it. Those voices that come from inside of you that say you can’t do this, you don’t measure up, you can’t get this done, who are you to think you can do this- SHUT THEM OUT! Instead, listen to the voice of truth. Do you remember that old Casting Crowns song- The Voice of Truth (tells me a different story). Start listening to the voice of truth. I AM who God says I am. I can do what his Holy Spirit empowers me to do. I can be what he wants me and purposes for me to be.
If you and I will begin learning to listen to those right voices in our life and shut out the negative voices, shut out the voices that say you’re going to fail; you’re not going to make it; you don’t have what it takes. If you will instead begin to listen to the voice of truth, the Bible. The Bible is the book from which I base my life. The One inside of me, the Holy Spirit, He is the source of my power and I am going to lean in on Him.
When I begin to listen to those voices of truth, that is going to be a game-changer for me! I am going to grow my confidence. I am going to all of a sudden believe that I CAN do this. I am not only going to grow in my confidence, but I will have the courage and the determination to take those steps I need to take and have the courage to go step-by-step and get from where I am today to where I know I need to be and I want to be and where God wants me to be. But, it is going to require you and I listening to those voices of truth!
